Bio

"When I read the book, the biography famous,
And is this, then, (said I,) what the author calls a man's life?"

Walt Whitman (1819–1892) from "Leaves of Grass"

1961- I was born in Buenos Aires, and grew up in an old building from the 19th. Century called "Conventillo". There was no hot water but wood floors, and the stairs from the ground level were made from Carrara's white marble, like Italian palaces. There were big rooms, a lot of space, private corners, sun, air, and beautiful landscape from the terrace. It was permitted to draw on the cracked walls. The big trees slowly disappeared around us, and tall and gray concrete towers replaced them.

1970- I began to study oil painting in an experimental workshop for children. The program included attending free concerts of classic music on Sunday mornings, to prepare a common lunch with the other children, and to read classic books and poetry "for children". The man responsible for these pedagogical ideas was the artist Eugenio Mariani, an anarchist and my father's friend.

1968-1973- Every summer we traveled to Montevideo, Uruguay, at the holiday's season. My parents had special memories of this city and it was a magic place for me, and by extension, all of Uruguay. The Carnival season, the beaches with sand and sweet water, the kindness of the local people built in my memory the idea of a land of happiness in my childhood.

1970-I won third prize at 'Billiken' Children’s Drawing Competition. One year before, in another local competition, my drawing was disqualified by one of the jury members under the affirmation that: "... an adult helped to draw, a child can't draw like this …" pointing at my drawing.

1973-1977-After a break, I returned to the workshop of Eugenio Mariani to learn painting.  Four conditions were required: to paint a minimum of 3 oil paintings a week; to attend critics and theory classes twice a month, to go to see the new exhibitions each Friday, and once a week to go to the Buenos Aires Museum of Fine Arts. Meanwhile, we were required to read philosophy, theory of art, poetry, to see movies of important directors and learn and hear classic music. To learn at high school with this intensive program wasn't simple, so I left behind basketball and other teenage social activities.

1976- In March, the Military Junta became a dictatorship; a new government in Argentine. In June, I was accepted to join the "Arts Fair" of the City of Buenos Aires, exhibiting my oil paintings in the Plaza San Telmo every Sunday. This new event allowed me to make contact with many artistic circles of the city's cultural life in the '70s: the Goethe Institute activities, galleries, anthroposophy lectures at the "Argentine Medical Society", to meet colleagues and arrange for landscape painting sessions at the Port, etc.

1977-As my father was blacklisted by the military government and friends began "to disappear," the family planned to emigrated as fast as possible.

1978- I arrived to a boarding school in Israel with no friends, language or close family. Suddenly I found myself at an unknown country, new environment, but plenty freedom.

1979- My first visit to European cultural temples: The Vatican, Venice museums and festivals, Rome's historic places, the Greek landscape from the Parthenon ruins, the Louvre’s endless galleries, the Impressionist masters at the Jeau de Paume, the Picasso Museum in the Gothic city in Barcelona, the Prado Museum’s fantastic collection. Additionally, the smells and tastes of the end of the '70s in Europe: strikes and Red Brigades in Italy, end of military governments in Spain and Greece, the 3rd. world invasion of France. These deep impressions found expression through travel, sketches and writing poems.

1980-1990-  I served three years of military service with a group of South American friends and joined a kibbutz in the Negev desert where I worked as a member and as an artist.

1982- First Lebanon war, for me, a traumatic experience that leaves traces in many of my works. To my surprise, I discovered that I was also required to enlist in the Argentinean army for the Falkland/Malvinas war which happened at the same time. It was clear that by destiny, it was decided that I must experience a war as a soldier.

1984-1988- studied at Betzalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem.  I was absorbed by the magical city of Jerusalem, acquiring a rich variety of new techniques.

1990-1997-I left the kibbutz in favor of the city, changing addresses every two years, working as a gardener, art teacher, book illustrator. After 14 years I received amnesty from the new Argentinean democratic government and I returned to visit family and friends.  My first son Shahar was born, I became a father!! This was a time of painting and writing.

1997-My divorce brought great changes. I begin to work in the semiconductor industry 4 days in a week; went to live in the Judean Desert, and began to write a novel. Visual contact with microns and nanometer was a new reality:  an incredible world of shapes, textures and colors.
1998- My first visit to Brazil after learning a lot of syncretism, for the novel, but reality is always greater: joy of life, sea, and dance.

1999-2000- I traveled twice to New Mexico, USA, for scanner microscope courses which gave me the possibility to meet members of  the Indian Pueblo culture, the enchanted desert landscapes, and also the Indian cultures of Guatemala.

2001- Traveling to Cuba was like realizing a dream, under the excuse of a family meeting. Some months later, my marriage ceremony at Cyprus confirmed to me my attraction for islands (and for deserts also!!!)

2002-My second son, Michael, was born. I began to plan to leave the Hi-Tech world and returning to art and teaching art. Visiting old friends in Denmark and Italy, I discovered that the world is constantly changing, not only in the Middle East.

2006-2010- Leaving the Hi-Tech industry and returning to the art world, I have participated  in group and individual exhibitions, teaching ceramic sculpture classes, drawing & painting, social and artistic projects. A decision made in favor of the privilege of freedom to create and express. Freedom to choose the way, the environment, the tools, and the message.

Since 2010- painting, experimentating with new and untraditional materials & supports, a kind ofcollage that maybe properly "mixed media", a category with wide horizonts. Between personal shows and collective exhibitions, arise a wider conection with Art in the Community, mostly with private initiatives and little communities. On the other side, the activity as Educator & mentorship in Art continues and expand to lecturing about artists, Art History and museums of the world.
